There are lots of car clubs in the Austin area, but few that meet on a weekly basis. And few that are as informal as the Lakeway Friday Car Club. No, there is no membership fee, nor is there any formal registration required (although you CAN signup to be on the email list to be notified of upcoming events). All that is required to join this non-marque-specific group is to show up around 1:30 on any Friday at the group’s regular meeting place: Sandeez Hamburger Hut on FM 620 just a couple of miles east of Lakeway proper.
The group has chosen 1:30 as the meeting time out of respect for the regular Sandeez lunch crowd. And, rightly so, since the collection of cars on a typical Friday pretty much fills up the parking lot.
There is no official “meeting” as such, just a bunch of classic car loving folks who take advantage of Austin’s temperate weather to exercise (and show off) their special car. There is always a different group of cars on display each week (many participants own multiple classics), and plenty to see for an enthusiast of any era.
The best part of the gathering, however, has to be the great Texas-style grilled hamburgers, and freshly cut french fries!
Come on out and join the group any Friday.
I’m hoping to bring my recently purchased ’63 Austin Healey Sprite and get some info on various matters.
